Continuous Media in Discrete Objects: Support for Collaborative Multimedia Continuous Media in Discrete Objects: Support for Collaborative Multimedia

چکیده
Multimedia has the same potential to revolutionize human-computer interfaces that bitmapped workstations have realized over the last decade. Achieving this potential requires the development of programming environments with integrated support for multimedia. SuiteSound is one such environment. SuiteSound is built in the Suite object-based system on a conventional UNIX operating system. SuiteSound objects incorporate multimedia by creating ows, which are streams of multimedia data moving through a sequence of objects. Flows bridge the gap between objects representing the state of an entity at a discrete point in time and space and continuous media such as live audio or video. This paper describes the design and implementation of SuiteSound on the Sun SparcStation. Three SuiteSound applications are described in detail: a teleconferencing tool, a voice annotator, and a collaborative software inspection tool. Experiences using the SuiteSound environment and applications are detailed, a retrospective of the diiculties and beneets of including multimedia in an object-based system is given, and suggestions for future work are included.

Multimedia systems are often divided into presentational and conversational domains: those which orchestrate prerecorded scenarios and those which provide audio/video teleconferencing. To be effective across a wide range of activities, however, collaborative multimedia systems must support the integration of presentational, conversational and interactive multimedia within a single shared media ...

Multimedia interaction between users usually takes the form of conferences. We propose a taxonomy of multimedia conferencing, and develop a model that can support most types of collaborative interactions. The model provides sophisticated features such as access control with respect to diierent media streams, exibility to use multiple media channels to participate in multiple conferences simulta...

Current database management system techniques are insuucient to support the management of multimedia data owing to their time-sampled nature. The extension of database systems to support multimedia applications thus requires new mechanisms to ensure the synchronized presentation of multimedia data streams. In order to exibly and eeciently present multimedia data streams to users, media streams ...
